It’s not uncommon for leaders to use one-to-one coaching to help bring clarity to ‘messy’ problems that need their personal attention.  By ‘messy’, we mean problems which haven’t gone away over a period of time and for which a solution is not clear.  These problems are ‘stuck’ in an unresolved state and are negatively impacting personal and organisational performance.

We use a coaching methodology that gives leaders the opportunity to explore and reflect on the specific issue they are wrestling with.  Our approach encourages the coachee to challenge their assumptions about the situation and identify options to resolve it.  It then takes them through a process to identify and commit to specific steps to move the situation forward.  Each coaching session is oriented to delivery of achievable and measurable progress, leading to the resolution of the problem in hand.

A distinctive characteristic of our coaching method is that it is non-directive.  That is, as coaches we do not steer the conversation or direct the coachee towards any given solution.  Rather, the coachee retains ownership of the conversation and decisions made.  We facilitate a process that encourages rigour in exploration and identification of options and commitment to the decisions made.

We typically use coaching to help clients work through specific problems where there are numerous factors to consider and choices to be made about how to progress.  Many of our coaching engagements are one-offs but others are used on a recurring basis.  For example, our First 100 days coaching for new executives helps any ‘new to role’ senior post holder navigate through the knowledge gathering and cultural dynamics of their new role and increase their speed to value.
